Does your job make you happy?

It’s no secret that we want more from our work lives these days. We’re prioritising balance more than ever, searching for purpose and redefining the way we work; all in the quest to find happiness in this (large) part of our lives.

But when it comes to finding happiness at work or with a potential new job, do you know what will make you happy?

In celebration of #WeekofHappinessatWork here’s our tips on what to consider in your search and interview process.

Figure out what happiness at work means to you

Do you like to keep your head down and push forward at work? Do you need to prioritise family commitments? Then you probably won’t enjoy a work environment that is constantly focused on team building and office social activities.

And of course, the reverse is also true.

When embarking on a new job search, it’s a good idea to think about what workplace features are important to you, and then try to find a job/employer that checks as many of your boxes as possible.

Ask about company culture

Company culture describes what it feels like to work at a company, and you’ll find many companies now make a deliberate effort to be purposeful in what sort of experience they provide their employees.

You can typically learn more about a business’s culture by looking at its website and social pages. They will probably speak directly about it somewhere on the website, and demonstrate it through social media. The best way to learn more though, is to speak with someone who works there. LinkedIn can be a fantastic resource for researching the company and connecting with employees.

Ask Them

Most people don’t like interviews. But here’s the truth: the business isn’t just vetting you. You are also vetting them.

When asked “Do you have any questions” (generally towards the end of the interview) is a great time to ask about employee wellness initiatives, company values (if not already mentioned) and what a typical day in the role may look like. These are all valid questions and won’t come as a surprise!

International Week of Happiness At Work isn’t formally recognised here in Australia yet, but with a rapidly changing workforce, we think it’s another fantastic opportunity to raise awareness of employee wellbeing in the workplace and encourage change. We’re proud to represent a number of employers who have the wellbeing of their employees high on their agendas, so if you are searching for happiness in a new role, contact us to discuss your requirements or visit our jobs board and register for job alerts here.
